3. Low-income clients

“Is financial assistance available for low-income men?”

Some men tell us that a C$100 face-to-face counseling fee is beyond their means. For these clients, we suggest the following:

  • Time Plan: With Time Plan, qualifying low-income clients pay $50—half our regular fee—at the time of their face-to-face session and the remaining $50 within 30 days. Please note that Time Plan is not available for online clients, who pay in advance.

  • Less frequent appointments: Rather than seeing your counselor once a week, consider less frequent appointments. Although weekly appointments usually produce a more intensive focus, progress is still possible with less frequent visits.
  • Save with outcome-directed counseling: Gay Men's Counseling uses an outcome-directed approach, which saves you money because therapeutic gains are normally achieved in fewer sessions than in traditional therapy. For a detailed discussion of outcome-directed counseling, please click here.

“Do you offer a sliding scale?”

Clients sometimes ask for a sliding scale, a system in which low-income clients pay less than those who are better off.

Gay Men's Counseling does not offer this option because we believe it discriminates against less-assertive men, who are usually reluctant to ask for payment relief. Furthermore, it is difficult to assess fairly a client's level of financial hardship.

We believe a single rate, combined with Time Plan, is fair for everyone. In extreme cases, an individual payment plan based on income tax records will be considered for face-to-face clients only.
