Crisis Information

IMPORTANT!

Online counseling is not an appropriate resource for individuals experiencing a life-threatening crisis.

If you are in severe emotional distress and/or are considering suicide and/or are thinking of harming another person, please immediately do one of the following:

  • If you are being treated by a mental health professional, contact him/her without delay.


  • Call a free telephone crisis line in your area. In North America and other regions, you can usually find the number in the front section of your local phone directory. Or you can dial your phone company operator (in North America, operators can usually be reached at 0 or 4-1-1) and ask to be connected to your local crisis line.


  • Go to your nearest hospital emergency ward. If you are unable to get to the hospital yourself, dial your local police-ambulance-fire emergency number (usually 9-1-1 in North America).

  • Suicide Hotlines: (http://www.suicidehotlines.com) Lists free suicide prevention help lines across the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and other areas. Also provides extensive information for individuals experiencing severe emotional distress and for friends and loved ones supporting such individuals.


  • Befrienders Worldwide: (http://www.befrienders.org/) Lists free suicide prevention help lines around the world. Also provides email service and extensive information for individuals experiencing severe emotional distress and for friends and loved ones supporting such individuals.


  • United States only: 24-hour toll-free nationwide suicide prevention help line: 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433).


  • United States only: The Trevor Helpline: 24-hour toll-free nationwide suicide prevention helpline for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and questioning teens: 1-800-850-8078.


  • United States only: The Gay & Lesbian National Hotline: Monday-Friday 6 p.m.-10 p.m. and Saturday noon-5 p.m. EST: 1-888-843-4564.


  • United States, Canada and other areas: Check your local phone directory for your nearest gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community center or dial directory assistance (usually 4-1-1) for the number. Many US centers are indexed here at
    http://www.lgbtcenters.org/directory.asp. Some of these centers offer free crisis help lines.


  • United Kingdom only: The Samaritans: (http://www.samaritans.org) 24-hour emergency support for individuals experiencing severe emotional distress, including feelings that may lead to suicide.
